Gearing up for travel with toddlers

If Mother Nature  was human and the month of April was her fourth child, she must have given her (and the entire spring season) the bane of passive aggressive behavior because April can’t decide if it wants to be full on spring or still hold on to winter. Each day in April you wake up to either low 50 degree temps, with cloudy, gray showers all day or a breezy sunny high 60′s teasing one into breaking out in shorts and flip-flops only for the temperature to drop back in the 40′s at nightfall.

But spring’s indecisive weather notwithstanding, those of us who can’t wait to usher in summer are done with our spring cleaning and gearing up for our summer travels.

These are my top  ’must-haves’ travel gear for families with toddlers.

1. Trunki : These lightweight, wheeled travel luggage for kids is a great carry-all. It stows easily in an airplane overhead compartment and offers plenty of space for all your kids essentials. It can also be used as a pseudo-stroller as you head from security area to your gate before boarding.

2. Electronic entertainment

Nowadays the standard tv in front of your airline seat is not enough to hold today’s tech savvy toddlers short attention span. These ‘must-bring’s are essential in this digital age.

3. Travel Pillow: I recommend this Sharper Image Slim Travel Pillow. It comes with its own travel case. Although it looks like a bolster pillow inside the case, it actually folds out to a comfortable sized pillow that provides ample neck support.

4. Travel first-aid kit : Amazon.com describes this kit as such; “The World Travel contains the supplies you need when traveling to remote locations where medical assistance may be hours or days away. Recommended for travel to developing nations, international relief work, or adventure travel involving high-risk activities, the World Travel provides you with a full complement of wound care supplies as well as medications to treat common travel ailments including stomach upset, dehydration, pain, and allergies.”  Or you can DIY your own travel first aid kit and tailor it according to your family’s needs.

5. Snack Packs: For extended air travel it’s always a good idea to pack your own snacks to make sure there are no melt-downs while onboard. As I mentioned in a previous entry, try not to pack too many sugary snacks as this might lead to an out-of-control sugar-rush state that you can’t contain during a packed transatlantic flight. Here are some ideas.

Summer might be two months away, but this tongueincheekmomma is already gearing up for travel. Happy adventures friends!

HAVE KIDS WILL TRAVEL (Top ten tips on traveling with kids)

I admit I am a bit of a worry wart. Sometimes I sweat the small stuff. I can’t help myself but agonize over details. But nothing makes me more anxious than traveling with my 3 kids, aged 8 and 4 year old twins. Especially traveling 18 hours halfway across the globe!
The last time my husband and I traveled overseas with child, was 6 years ago when our now 8-yr old was only 2. Now that our family has gone from party of 3 to party of five, the stress level for traveling has gone up quite a few notches for me.
The only way for me to keep sane through the days leading to our vacation is to find helpful tips online on the best ways to keep three kids pre-occupied on an 18-22 hour trip.
Here I have gathered the best advice on how not to come unhinged  for moms and dads traveling with little kids:

TIP # 1 LOAD UP ON “PASSIVE” ACTIVITIES

“If you’re heading out on a long journey have a collection of toys to be handed out once an hour. Handheld puzzles, tiny colouring books, stickers, word searches, Wiki Stix and play dough will pass the time on a long flight.”

TIP # 2 DON’T JUST RELY ON AIRPLANE FOOD. BRING SNACKS.

“Resist the temptation to keep them going on a long journey by feeding them sweets. Pack a mixture of savoury snacks like cheese cubes/sticks, cut-up pita bread, pretzels, fruit and bagels – anything to avoid arriving in a strange city with children in the middle of a sugar rush.” *Exceptions should be made for landing and take-off. SEE TIP # 8

TIP #3 DON’T FORGET THE FIRST AID KIT.

“It should already be on your traveling list, but having kids along means carrying a small first aid kit is all the more vital: plasters, antihistamines and sachets of painkilling syrup can save a lot of stress later on. Antimalarials are also available in liquid form (for those traveling to more exotic locales).”

TIP #4 HAVE SANITIZERS AND WIPES HANDY

“Even if all your children are long out of diapers, don’t forget the baby wipes. They’re useful for washing hands, cleaning toilet seats, and wiping down restaurant tables. In the same spirit, little bottles of hand cleanser can be a lifesaver in some countries, but check the travel regulations for liquids well in advance.”

TIP #5 GADGETS, GIZMOS AND APPS

“Get some kids games or apps for your smart phone or laptop. Download some kids’ games – or kid-friendly apps to your mobile (if it can be switched to Airplane mode for the flight).”

Bring a portable DVD player and at least 3-4 DVD’s for those long-haul flights.

TIP #6 PACK A SMALL PILLOW

“Small children can sit on a pillow so they can see out of the window better, while older children may find sleeping more comfortable with a pillow.  A blanket is also good as its familiarity will comfort your child as well as keep them warm if it gets chilly on-board.”

For long flights I personally don’t recommend those travel pillows that sit on the shoulders and only provide neck support. I recommend the Sharper Image travel pillow (to be featured in my following article).

TIP #7 WATCH OUT FOR THE “AIRPLANE POLICE”

“A clever trick is to warn young children of the ‘Airplane Police’ who are looking out for badly behaved children as they are not allowed to fly. I am not suggesting you scare them out of their wits (and admittedly we never did explain what the Airplane Police actually do when they catch a naughty child) – however it proved hugely effective in stopping my toddler climbing over seats, playing with the fold down table, kicking the seat in front and all the other things that passengers around you really love.”

TIP # 8 GIVE THE KIDS LOLLIPOPS ON TAKE-OFF AND LANDING

The sucking motion relieves their eardrums from the pressure in the cabin and the altitude change.

“Which is why toddlers find it helpful to suck on something or have a drink during take-off and landing.”

“Additionally, the low humidity of cabin air can cause mild dehydration as well as dry and irritated nostrils, so it’s important to get kids to drink regularly. If anyone gets a streaming nose (also a factor of low humidity), wet the insides of their nostrils with a finger dipped in water – this often works like magic. Flying can also prompt air expansion in the middle ear and sinuses, which can be painful for babies and infants because of their smaller ear passages. To prevent discomfort, massage your child’s ears from behind and give the earlobes a few gentle tugs from time to time.”

TIP# 9 BRING ONLY ONE CARRY ON

“You no longer need a book to read, you no longer need your own snacks. You can no longer use your carry on in place of checking luggage. Once you have filled a bag with the essentials for a long flight, you won’t have the strength to carry anything else, and you will appreciate only having one bag to keep track of in a busy airport. If your child is old enough, do however,  let them carry their own.”

TIP# 10 DRESS THE KIDS IN COMFORTABLE CLOTHES

Instead of jeans have them wear cotton tracksuits as this will be a lot more comfortable for them. The hoodie will provide extra warmth when the cabin gets chilly. And make sure to get the zippered hoodies as this will make it easier to take off and put on. “For an easier exit from the screening area where shoes must come off, skip the lace-up sneakers and put the kids in easy-on, easy-off shoes that slip-on or use the magic of Velcro.”

I know that even armed with all the best tips and advice, and no matter how well prepared one might be, when it comes to traveling with kids, the most important part is to expect the unexpected and keep in mind that you and your family are not taking time off, but rather putting time in for each other. So enjoy your adventure and keep adding on to the tapestry that will be your family’s history by making each moment count.

With that said , happy travels and keep reading for more helpful tips on have kids, will travel.

Dreaming of sunshine part 5 (Going to Hell and back!)

It’s 17 degrees celsius today and yesterday was just as bitterly cold. Jack Frost is on overdrive this winter!

Since it’s a holiday today, this is the best time to present my top of the list, #1 spot for warm weather holiday get-aways.

SUN LOVERS HAVEN # 1 THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

FODOR’S travel guide lists these highlights as Cayman Islands allure, or what I call “what makes a 5-star destination”:

# 1 Diving: Underwater visibility is among the best in the Caribbean, and nearby reefs are healthy.

#2 Safety and Comfort: With no panhandlers, little crime, and top-notch accommodations, it’s an easy place to vacation.

#3 Dining Scene: The cosmopolitan population extends to the varied dining scene, from Italian to Indian.

#  Snorkeling: A snorkeling trip to Stingray City is an experience you’ll always remember.

#5 Beaches: Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach is one of the Caribbean’s best sandy beaches.

Here’s my personal, hand’s on experience of those 5 star ratings:

#1 We didn’t get to go diving because this vacation was post-delivery of my twin sons and the tall order was just to relax and de-compress. So we spent our time in the Cayman Islands doing just that!

An alternative to diving is the submarine tours, which was a fun little adventure, and quite bucketlist worthy. However I would not recommend this tour to anyone even slightly claustrophobic. The submarine is quite cozy and you will be underwater in VERY close quarters for at least 45 minutes!mail-1

mail-2

#2 The Cayman islands is a 76 sq mile island with no mountains, just flat landscapes . The hotels on the island are typically upscale but unlike its other Caribbean island counterparts where you can find gigantic water slides, wave pools and waterpark-like attractions, the Cayman Islands keeps the focus on its beautiful seven mile white sand beach.

During our entire stay we felt comfortable enough to explore the island on our own, without getting hassled by tour operators hawking guided island tours. There’s plenty of taxicabs that can take you into the heart of town center. There’s duty-free shopping and  decent dining to be had in town.

As per Fodor’s there really were no panhandlers and lots of security around. We absolutely felt secure discovering the island by ourselves.

mail-8mail-6mail-5mail-3

#3 There’s a variety of cuisines available all throughout the island. But my favorite was dining at the Ritz Carlton’s very own Eric Ripert (of Le Bernardin NYC fame) restaurant. There was also decent Japanese cuisine at the Ritz and the best truffle fries at the al fresco dining of the Ritz poolside.

#4 Making a visit to Stingray City is a must! The experience of swimming with the stingrays is just magical!

#5 This is the piece de resistance: the Seven Mile beach. Pristine white sand plus calm blue waters equals paradise!

mail-7images-7

And if there’s paradise then there’s also hell.

The West Bay  of the island is home to black, jagged rock formations which led the natives to call this area Hell. No. I’m not kidding, this place is really named Hell! In fact if you send a postcard to your loved ones from the town’s post office it will be postmarked from HELL!

So after experiencing paradise you can tell everyone that you’ve been to HELL AND BACK!!!!

And this completes my top 5 list of the best beach getaways.  #5 San Diego, #4 St. Lucia, #3 South Padre Island, Texas, #2 Big Island Hawaii and # 1 Cayman Islands.

I look forward to discovering more must-see  destinations to share with everyone.

Because traveling our beautiful planet affirms my  own insignificance yet magnifies the intensity of each person’s responsibility to keep this place we call earth, exquisite and inhabitable for future generations.

Dreaming of sunshine, part 4

No better day than today to share the 4th installment of my visualization exercise. With a snowstorm brewing and 18 inches of snow expected overnight, this post is a great way to make dreaming of sunshine a little easier.

SUN LOVERS HAVEN # 2 BIG ISLAND, HAWAII

When you visualize Hawaii what comes to mind are coconut trees and heavenly expansive sandy beaches. But looking out the plane as you approach Big Island, what greets you is a rocky terrain making it look more like you’re landing on the moon and not a lush tropical island!

And with the most active volcano ,Kilauea calling Big Island home, you know you are in a magical, mystical place.

But the island’s volcanos is just half the story. This paradise is also known for its lush rainforests and mountains making it the perfect getaway for someone who craves inspiration from the sheer beauty and magnificence of mother nature.

We drove through the mountains where some of the most beautiful tropical bed and breakfasts are located. These old plantation homes and properties converted to quaint inns provides the alternative traveler a more budget friendly way to enjoy the beauty of the Big Island. If you would rather commune with nature, while not exactly roughing it or if you don’t enjoy crowds and breakfast buffets and the very thought of  sharing your zen moment with families with little kids gives you massive headaches and anxiety attacks , then staying at one of these bed and breakfasts is your cup of tea.

As for me and my husband, we stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa, and it was incredible! This is a unique destination so bucket list worthy!

Hilton Waikoloa Village is not your ordinary, run of the mill 6 star resort. This is THE Taj Mahal of the islands. It’s a self-contained city with air conditioned trams and boats connecting the guests to either end of the sprawling property.

Dining at the Waikaloa offers a variety of cuisines, from Japanese to French and everything in between. Honestly you can stay in the property alone and not have any lack of activities to indulge in. There’s a wealth of family centered activities and romantic escapades for moms and dads.

My only suggestion is to make sure you’re booked for at least a week-long stay because anything shorter is criminal.

Aloha and enjoy the view.Kona Pool

Dreaming of sunshine series part 3

SUNLOVERS HAVEN # 3 SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS

I love South Padre Island for many reasons. One is the proximity to my husband’s family.( I’m blessed to have the nicest, most loving and caring in-laws).  Although my in-laws are native New Yorkers, they retired to South Texas in the mid-80′s and have called it home since.

But family aside, South Padre Island is definitely the gem of the state of Texas. Situated in the tropical tip of Texas, SPI is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and Laguna Madre Bay. The island is linked to the mainland by the 2 1/2 mile Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge. The island has 5,000 permanent residents, mostly retirees from the north seeking sun and warm weather ,and about 1 million visitors per annum.

South Padre is a huge spring break destination, as many travel sites proclaim, so if you are looking for a nice, laid-back get-away with your toddlers, word to the wise, AVOID South Padre Island during spring break. This island becomes party central!

But if you are looking to book that long-awaited vacation with your family in tow, July and August, while charting some of the hottest days of the year, has its perks since it doesn’t get as crowded as spring break season. As these were the months when I went with my little kids in tow, I can say from first hand experience that using an SPF60 sunblock is extremely helpful! mail-8

mail-7mail-6

For adrenaline-rush junkies there’s a lot of activities on the island that caters to this niche. Try bungee jumping at Louie’s Backyard, or go windsurfing. There’s also parasailing and surfing and it wouldn’t be Texas without  some horseback riding, now would it?

mail-9

South Padre Island also boasts of an emerging ecotourism industry . As its official website states:

“Ecotourism is vibrant with dolphin boat trips, birding and sea turtles. The Dolphin and Nature Research Center provides a hands-on encounter with the Gulf’s inhabitants and stresses the significance of conservation. With more than 306 recorded bird species, the Island has become one of the premier birding locations in the Western Hemisphere. Historic Port Isabel is located just over the bridge. It offers much of the same recreational activities.”

Accommodations on the Island run the gamut of your standard hotels and motels/inns to condos that cater to large families or groups. These condos whose owners mainly use their property for holidays and weekend get-aways on the island  rent out their condos to short-term tenants/visitors through the building management’s office. mail-1

My family and I stayed at Sunchase Condos and were very pleased with its proximity to the beach. Because the sand gets a beating from the extreme July heat, we let our kids enjoy the pool first and walked to the beach when the sand wasn’t scorching our toesies anymore.

I can see why many Texans flock to South Padre for rest and recreation. Life on this island is idyllic and surreal. When you’re sitting on your balcony overlooking the breath-taking view of the Gulf of Mexico, you feel a certain serenity and then you understand, this is why people come here to retire.

Oh and for all you foodies… in Port Isabel, just across the bridge, is a hole in the wall dive called Manuel’s. If you want gut-busting, out-of-this-world, mouth-watering burritos, you cannot miss this place. The best burritos this side of the border! Just sayin’.

Dreaming of Sunshine series part 2

SUN LOVERS HAVEN # 4  ST. LUCIA

One of the advantages of traveling to St. Lucia or any of the Caribbean Islands, is its proximity to the east coast. Just a few hours of  jetting and you’re in paradise.

St. Lucia is simply stunning. Located midway down the eastern Caribbean chain, between Martinique and St. Vincent, this exotic destination is only 14 miles wide and 27 miles long. On the eastern shore of the island is the Atlantic Ocean while its west coast delivers the calmer seas of the Caribbean.

Its official tourism guidebook states: “In natural beauty, St. Lucia seems like an island plucked from the South Pacific and set down in the Caribbean. Its dramatic twin coastal peaks, the Pitons, soar 2,000 feet up from the sea, sheltering magnificent rain forests where wild orchids, giant ferns, and birds of paradise flourish. Brilliantly-plumed tropical birds abound, including endangered species like the indigenous St. Lucia parrot. The rainforest is broken only by verdant fields and orchards of banana, coconut, mango, and papaya trees.”

And I couldn’t agree more about the awe-inspiring beauty of the juxtaposition between the breathtaking shores and the lush forest. We went biking in the woods and hiking up the mountain trails to capture the magnificent landscape from a bird’s-eye view. Wind sailing and surfing was also a popular activity on the island. We didn’t get to enjoy these but it sure looked like fun!

Our trip to St. Lucia also marked our first ever scuba diving experience. Conveniently, there was a dive school on premise at the Sandals Resort. We let our spirit for adventure take over and set out to take beginners diving lessons. While the scuba diving experience was monumental for us, it being our first ever, I’d be lying if I say the underwater scenery blew me away. Even for a newbie like me, having seen pictures taken by some avid scuba diving friends, my experience paled in comparison. But it was an exhilarating moment nonetheless. Based on first hand experience, I recommend sticking to other water activities. As I mentioned, there’s plenty to choose from on the island. If you’re in relaxation mode, it’s also not a bad idea to lounge by the beautiful pool, pina colada in one hand and that book you’ve always promised to read in the other. Or you can sidle up to the bar and chat up some new friends with calypso music wafting in the background. And that’s the beauty of island get-aways. You can party with just your swimsuit on.

Dreaming of sunshine

Yesterday  I wrote a piece on seasonal affective disorder. Writing that piece made me reflect on my first years as a transplant in New York.

Moving to New York was an exhilarating, pivotal episode in my life. One memory that sticks out to me on my first year as an official resident of NY is getting bundled up to watch the parade down 5th Avenue for St. Patrick’s Day. Who cared if I wasnt Irish, I was there to partake of the revelry and stand in awe of the new life ahead of me.  Watching a parade down 5th Avenue, in the big apple, bundled up in 3 layers of clothing felt so foreign that it seemed like a sort of rebirth, a new chapter. With the snowflakes casting its baptismal showering of snow, this was my initiation to my new life in my new home. My slate wiped clean and here I was, standing on the lines of an annual New York tradition, in a New York state of  mind.

I grew up in a country where the temperatures rarely dropped below 70, where it was either rainy or sunny. Where as soon as the temperature dropped to a “chilly” 60, everyone rushed to put on their jackets and sweaters! We are warm blooded people used to enjoying 85 to 100 degree weather almost 365 days of the year. So yes it was a big deal when there was a bit of nippy-ness in the air.

My family and friends loved to come up north in the winter months, thinking it’s fun to be buried in 5 layers of clothing and feel like a zombie walking down 7th Avenue! When winter is a novelty, it’s fun. If you knew you were coming home to 80 deg weather, a week of snow is  magical and inspirational. Winter was quite a novelty  for me too those freshman years of living in NY.

Fast forward to present. In a few years I will celebrate two decades of living in New York. What a difference those years have made. And what a change in my outlook on many issues. But lets stick to the weather for now.

Now that the novelty has worn off and the reality that winter will come around again after each fall, I am constantly dreaming of white sand dunes, blue waters, tropical breeze and the ripples of the wave tickling my feet as I sit on the sand with the sun stroking my skin like a long-lost lover.

And because Henry David Thoreau once proclaimed:

“One must maintain a little of summer, even in the middle of winter”, as a sort of survival mode strategy for the long, cold winters of the Northeast, I will keep on visualizing  some of the best sunshine destinations I’ve travelled to in the past. Did I mention I’m big on visualization exercises? Because nothing is more powerful than an image, a visual that our eyes and mind can focus on. Yes indeed,  a picture is worth a thousand words.

Follow me on a series of  sunny destinations from my past travels. For the next couple of days I will share my personal TOP 5 sun lovers haven. Today’s feature:

# 5 SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

IMG_0050

For me San Diego ‘s beaches represents the iconic laid back California lifestyle. Unlike the artificial and glitzy air that Miami’s South Beach screams of San Diego’s shoreline has a more down-to-earth quality that gives it its charm.

San Diego is known for its 70 miles of pristine coastline, where mild temperatures make enjoying the surf and sand a year round activity. From the beautiful reefs and beaches of La Jolla, to Coronado, Cardiff-by-the -Sea and its best kept secret Carlsbad beaches, San Diego is my California dream.

IMG_0077

When we went, by a stroke of luck we had family who were available to babysit our then only child. This priceless couples get-away gave me and my husband unrestricted time to wander through San Diego and enjoy the beaches by day and the nightspots when the sun went down. We also enjoyed walking through downtown San Diego and La Jolla’s streets and admire the mixed architecture of the area.IMG_0056

The laid back lifestyle, the beautiful beaches and San Diego’s small town yet cosmopolitan feel is what makes this California city my #5 top sunshine destination.
As the Mamas and the Papas song goes: California dreaming on such a winters day………

These are the stuff family vacations are made of.

The 411 on getting on a 747 with your 1,2,3′s

It’s Thanksgiving week, and for many Americans that means clocking many windshield hours should the mode of transport preferred is by car.
But for many families Thanksgiving means hauling the kids to grandma and grandpa’s using up all the sky miles mom and dad have been saving all year long.
And for families like mine who have toddlers and/or multiples, flying can be a nerve wracking ordeal that requires reconnaissance planning many  weeks in advance.
So before I share these great links that can help ease the burden of flying with the toddlers here are a few of my own tricks :
1. Aside from each child’s backpack of goodies make sure you have a “secret stash” of new toys. Show me one kid who doesn’t squeal with joy when presented with a new toy. The beauty is the toys don’t have to be expensive. Just little tokens that will keep them preoccupied after they get bored with their techy digital entertainment will do.
I also like to add little activity books with stickers. Kids are fascinated with stickers! Despite the average toddler’s tech savvy-ness these days, thankfully the not so high tech diversions still entertain them even if it only lasts for a New York minute .
2. Make sure to pack gum ( if your child is old enough to understand that  gum is not to be swallowed) for take off and landing to relieve pressure on their eardrums. Or bring a sippy cup and make sure they drink from it upon take off.  The suction action will also relieve the pressure on their ears.
3. Bring your toddlers old baby socks you were throwing out anyways, and a marker or felt tip pen. Make  finger sock puppets with your toddler. This can be a fun two-part activity that will keep them busy. After making a family of finger puppets you can make up silly songs and stories about the characters created.
